“Dau Ma May” Protests in Vietnam

Christine O’Hannon

HO CHI MINH CITY--
A propaganda campaign employing the slogan “Dau Ma May,” or “Motherfucker,” has been spreading across Vietnam, apparently directed at the current government and president.

It is unknown where this propaganda originated from but it has quickly spread across social media and has become a rallying cry for dissatisfied youth in Vietnam. The phrase has been spray-painted across several government buildings in Hanoi, and reportedly the president’s home. Protesters have began assembling in front of the capitol building in Hanoi and chanting “Dau Ma May” throughout the day and into the night, with the crowds only growing larger by the hour. The Vietnam Embassies in Malaysia and the Philippines were also struck by vandals, with the phrase spray-painted over the front of the buildings and shattered several windows with bricks.

The Vietnamese government has not released any comments as of this time.
