The tensions between China and Vietnam look to be reaching its peak as both sides have begun to mobilize military forces toward the border between the two countries. This mobilization of forces comes in the aftermath of ethnic tensions between Hoa and Vietnamese citizens, the sinking of a Chinese naval ship, and ongoing crisis’ between both sides at the border.

Both China and Vietnam are potentially willing to send a large number of foot soldiers toward the border. Early estimates report a potential combined mobilization of 200,000 troops. A number of states in the region have voiced concern over the large-scale mobilization, fearing for their security and well being. This predicament leaves the international community in a difficult situation to try to prevent conflict between China and Vietnam.
