UPDATE: American Peace Corps Hostage Killed in Rescue Attempt

WASHINGTON --
American and Filipino forces in a jointly-coordinated rescue mission stormed the school in Zamboanga City, Philippines, where 17 hostages were being held captive.

The rescue attempt occurred immediately after an American Peace Corps worker being held hostage by militants of the Islamic State of East Asia (ISEA) was beheaded and dumped in front of the school. When the body was thrown out of a window, forces fired on the individual, fatally shooting the perpetrator.

In addition to the beheaded American captive, an Australian and a Canadian captive were also killed in the crossfire. All five perpetrators were killed in the firefight. Sources say that of the five individuals, one was from Malaysia, and one was from Indonesia.

The rescue follows another successful attempt to free Philippine Secretary of the Interior and Local Government, Mar Roxas.
