Chaos Erupts at Ethnic Reconciliation Festival

HO CHI MINH CITY --

The Vietnamese Fatherland Front, in order to restore order and promote national solidarity, hosted an event in Hanoi's Ba Dinh Square to encourage cultural reconciliation between all ethnic groups of Vietnam.

During a segment regarding the cuisine of Vietnam, a panel of chefs were presented to discuss how Vietnamese dishes took origins from various ethnic dishes. During the discussion about the various forms of Pho, the ubiquitous national dish of Vietnam, a chef exclaimed that the dish was introduced to Vietnam by Chinese merchants in the 1800s. Strong opposition from the crowd denounced the chef, with attendees throwing plastic chairs onto the stage, proclaiming that the loved dish was always devised in Vietnam, and that Chinese noodles are inherently different.

Fighting emerged between individuals that applauded the chef's comments and other observers, with members of Vietnam's Communist youth wing accused of attacking ethnic Hoa and Chinese nationals attending the event. Six individuals were severely injured when a scaffolding collapsed in the chaos, with dozens injured in fighting. Police forces reportedly arrived after waiting over 30 minutes on the perimeters of the event, detaining dozens of individuals. Many of the youth members of Vietnam's Communist wing left upon the arrival of the police forces.

No comment has been received from the Vietnamese government at this time.
