MANILA – It has been confirmed that China has invaded a Filipino island in what appears to be an act of aggression. Chinese are citing intelligence that indicates that the Vietnamese government was responsible for the sinking of Chinese warship Nanjing during a joint Philippine-Vietnamese naval exercise.

Public opinion polls show an overwhelming support for the government to invoke the Mutual Defense Agreement, which would call upon the United States to assist Filipino forces in defending its sovereign insular territory.

Authorities are currently consulting with U.S. officials at the Embassy in Manila. The U.S. has not yet made an official statement. Update: Island invaded is in disputed territory in the Spratly Islands. Territory is claimed to be held by both the Philippines and Vietnam.
